The Smart Fortwo minicar came to the US in 2008, and I think most Americans — myself included — didn’t quite know what to make of it. For 2011, Smart has given the Fortwo a very minor makeover. The cosmetic changes to the front fascia and instrument panel are almost impossible to spot, but the functional changes are much more noticeable: Knee airbags for all models, side-curtain airbags for coupes, and options like integrated navigation and (finally!) cruise control.
Skeptical as I was about the last Smart I drove, I was surprised at just how much I enjoyed this one. Not that it was love at first site; my first day of driving felt like a mobile prison sentence. But with each passing day I got used to the Smart’s foibles and found myself looking for excuses to drive it. By the end of my test week, I was reluctant to give it up.
What did I like about the Smart? For one thing, the Cabriolet version I drove is the least-expensive convertible sold in the US. For $18,400 — same as a decently-equipped Honda Civic — you get an open-top car with air conditioning and an automatic transmission. The Smart’s convertible roof slides back like a giant sunroof (link goes to photo) and then folds into a bundle at the rear of the car (where it blocks half the view in the rear-view mirror). Getting the full convertible effect requires manually removing the side rails, but it’s an easy job and they store neatly inside the trunk lid. One advantage to leaving the roof rails in place is that you can open and close the top at any speed — something no other convertible I know of can do. And because the Fortwo Cabriolet is so small and so stiff, it doesn’t suffer from the chassis flex that plagues most convertibles.

2012 Nissan Versa Review. No matter what some pundits might say, the fact remains that in North America, we simply don’t live in a small car culture. Given a choice between buying a pint-size people mover and something that’s bigger and better equipped at the same price, in most cases consumers will opt for the latter.
That said, even at the entry level, a car needn’t be a penalty box on wheels. That’s something Nissan is hoping it has with its revamped 2012 Versa sedan. Designed to compete with the likes of the Ford Fiesta sedan and recently re-worked Toyota Yaris, it promises to offer a good blend of fuel economy, practicality and interior room at the lowest possible entry price. Question is, does it?
BABY ALTIMA?
Certainly in the looks department, the new Versa is a radical departure from the old, which was rather sensible and boxy looking, leaving some to question whether it was actually conceived for 1997 instead of 2007.
The new one is much more fluid, following Nissan’s current design language, sporting curvaceous fenders and an almost cokebottle profile from some angles. Squint and you might mistake it for a baby Altima sedan. That said, in profile it perhaps looks a tad awkward thanks to a noticeable rear overhang. Clearly necessary to provide any meaningful amount of trunk space, this aspect is by no means unique to the Versa – the Fiesta suffers from it too.

Ford, Toyota will partner on RWD hybrid system for trucks and SUVs. Is the Prius V not big enough for you? Then you’ll probably be interested to learn that Ford and Toyota announced a partnership today to develop a new hybrid system for SUVs and light trucks. The “equal partners” deal should result in a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain that will be ready “later this decade” – in other words, in time for the higher CAFE standards that the U.S. government just announced.
The exact models that will use the new powertrain are, unsurprisingly, not being revealed. Instead, all we know is that Toyota and Ford will develop a rear-wheel-drive hybrid system that will improve the efficiency of trucks and SUVs while still allowing them to be driven in the way customers expect them to. The powertrain’s architecture will most likely not be the same as what is used in the dominant Hybrid Synergy Drive that Toyota has refined over the past 14 years in the Prius.
The reason no one knows for sure? All that Ford and Toyota have as this moment is a Memorandum of Understanding. The next step will be a feasibility study to figure out what the exact implementation path will be, with the general outline being that the companies will work together on a powerplant that will be used independently in models that are specific to each company (i.e., this is not about sharing a platform or models, just a RWD hybrid powerplant). The two automakers will also work together on in-vehicle telematics.
Today’s announcement could further confuse some people’s understanding of the history of hybrid technology, since it has long been an urban legend that Ford licensed its earlier hybrid tech from Toyota. This did not happen, as we explained back in 2009.

The Subaru Forester, a successful small SUV/wagon since 1998, was redesigned for 2009. This generation is larger and similar to other car-based compact SUVs out there, including the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V. It seats five people and has standard all-wheel drive.
Forester has a newly available portable navigation system, a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a new top-of-the-line 2.5XT Touring model. The EcoBoost engine features direct fuel injection that sprays the fuel directly into the combustion chambers as opposed to the intake ports. This advanced technology aids in performance and fuel economy as well as helping to lower tailpipe emissions. While the EcoBoost engine is designed to provide the best performance on premium fuel, it can be operated on regular unleaded, too. Mated to the powerful V-6 is a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission that operates automatically or manually via steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Spy Shots: 2013 Ford Focus RS.

The current Ford Focus RS is a beastly little hatch, piping 305 horsepower through its front wheels, slinging pointy bits at you from every angle, and, of course, not being available for purchase here in the U.S.–and that’s before you even consider the RS500. It looks like the next-gen car could add to the mix with a hybrid all-wheel drive system–and, according to these spy shots, possibly a wagon, shown testing alongside its five-door hatchback sibling.
Though the wagon is not fully decked out in RS gear, it does feature RS seats and a wide central exhaust outlet like the hatch it was spotted with.
A Focus RS Wagon? Well, it would be known as the Turnier in some parts. As the long-roof model in the Focus stable, we’re more familiar with the wagon name. Either way, we doubt we’ll see it in America. Why? Because Americans don’t like wagons, for whatever reason, and even more so because of the price: it should sit around the $40,000 mark, which is beyond the pale for most of us when it comes to a tarted-up Ford.
If the next RS does go all-wheel drive and hybrid, though, our green-eyed monster is likely to rage even more fiercely: a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine plus an electric motor could still top 300 horsepower, deliver fuel economy in the mid- or upper-30 mpg range, and offer the same or similar performance to the current RS.
We’re still looking at about a two-year wait until we see the next Focus RS, in hatch, wagon, or any other body style, however. The cars spotted here are development mules for testing near and on the Nurburgring.
